The Charleston Board of Education is located next to the Charleston Middle School along Main Street in Charleston , MO.  Meetings are held here once per month or as needed. If you need information regarding meeting times and dates, please call the office during business hours.

As elected representatives of the citizens of the Charleston R-1 School District, the seven-member Board of Education serves as the governing body for the community’s public school system. The school board sets district policies, selects the superintendent of schools, adopts the annual budget, and determines the tax rate.

An annual school board election is held in April. Board members serve three-year overlapping terms with two or three members elected each year. School board members receive no salary and are committed and concerned citizens who devote countless hours working on behalf of the children and the educational interests of Charleston R-1 residents.

The Charleston R-I School District’s will strive to achieve excellence in education by focusing on:

  • Meeting student needs in achieving educational success.
  • Establishing programs that enable students to apply technology competently.
  • Meeting student needs in the communication of ideas and feelings.
  • Enhancing individual personal responsibility.
  • Involving parents and community in the education of students.
  • Fostering a safe environment for students and teachers that will be conductive to a proper atmosphere for learning.

The Board of Education generally meets the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. Meetings are held at the Board of Education office at 1014 South Main Street, Charleston, Missouri. The community is welcome and encouraged to attend the open meetings.

Regular meetings and board workshops are open to the public. Executive session meetings, which are closed to the public in accordance with Missouri Sunshine Law, are scheduled as required and held only for certain student, personnel, property, and legal matters.

District residents are welcome to share their views with the Board of Education. District residents who wish to address the Board must submit a written request five work days prior to the meeting date to the superintendent, outlining their business with the Board. Speakers are to be brief with their comments and are to furnish copies of their comments.

Residents may also express their views in writing to the Superintendent of Schools, PO Box 39, Charleston, Missouri, 63834. Copies of the material submitted will be provided to all Board members for consideration.
